CRL SUNSHADE SYSTEMS ENHANCE THE BEAUTY AND EFFICIENCY OF USF'S PATEL CENTER

The Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions is the University of South Florida’s first fully-constructed LEED certified building. This showcase building demonstrates that building “green” does not mean sacrificing beauty for energy efficiency. One of the energy efficient features that enhances the design of the exterior is the use of a sunshade system custom manufactured by CRL in a silver metallic finish over each window opening. Because the sunshades are actually attached inside the window openings, CRL was challenged to create a curtain wall bracket that would only anchor at the bottom, yet be strong enough for the span and loads requirements of Florida building codes. The wider window areas also required a custom center bracket to fasten the sunshade. CRL worked with the glazing contractor, West Tampa Glass Co., Inc., to create the unique brackets.

The fully fabricated sunshades used tapered bullnose outriggers, 3” round blades and 6” bull nose fascia. The Patel Center was constructed on an east-west axis to make the best use of the sunlight. Solar panels on the roof heat water for use in the building, while CRL Sunshades on the windows keep the heat out while letting light in. CRL was proud to play a major role in enhancing the energy efficiency of the Patel Center’s façade.
